Scaling and units

Scale any recipe, and cook it in your units.

StoveTab scales the recipes you cook with it. Change the servings and every amount updates in kitchen units: 6 teaspoons become 2 tablespoons, and eggs stay whole. Switch between US and metric, and oven temperatures in the steps gain °C or °F. When the author gave gram weights, metric uses theirs.

On iPhone, the StoveTab app opens the recipe's own page with cook mode in a sheet over it.

How it works

  1. 1

    Open the recipe with StoveTab

In Chrome's side panel or the iPhone app, beside the author's own page.

  2. 2

    Change the servings

On the Ingredients tab, tap − or +. Every amount rescales, and so do the ingredients shown with each step.

  3. 3

    Pick your units

As written, Metric or US. Measures land on sizes a cook would use, not 0.33 cups.

  4. 4

    Read temperatures both ways

In metric, “Preheat to 350°F” reads “Preheat to 350°F (175°C)”; in US, Celsius gets its Fahrenheit.

Scaling needs a recipe that says how many it serves or makes. Signed in, you can add the recipe to your shopping list at the servings you chose.

Questions cooks ask

  • What happens to eggs when I scale?

Things you can't split, like eggs, cans, cloves and slices, are rounded to whole ones, and a rounded count is marked with ≈. Half a can as written stays half a can until you change the servings.

  • Does it convert cups to grams?

When the author wrote a gram weight beside the cups, metric shows the author's own weight. Otherwise StoveTab converts cups to millilitres and ounces and pounds to grams, and spoon-sized amounts stay in teaspoons and tablespoons. It doesn't guess what a cup of flour weighs.

  • Does scaling change baking times?

No, and bake times don't scale with amounts. When you scale a baked recipe up or down by about a quarter or more, StoveTab reminds you to change the pan size and check early.

  • Will it remember that I cook in metric?

Yes, on that browser or phone. The units you pick there apply to every recipe you cook with StoveTab until you change them.

  • Is StoveTab free?

Yes. Cook mode is free in Chrome and on iPhone: steps one at a time, timers, scaling, unit conversion and your saved place. StoveTab Pro, $29 a year, is for cooks who keep a lot: more than 3 boards and 10 of their own recipes, one shopping list across recipes, and photos on the cooks they log.
